As an organizer, I love lists. I make a list for everything. Shopping, packing for vacations, moving, etc. My house is organized to a T. It may not always stay perfectly organized which is why I keep lists.
I have to-do lists on my calendar every quarter to straighten closets, re-organize the pantry and update our traveling stuff. This month, in Part 1 of my organization series, I thought I would share how I pack for trips and how to stay organized while on the road.
Part 1 - Enjoying your Stay
We travel quite a bit. Working from home is great and definitely has it's perks however, when you want to relax it's hard to do it in the same place you work. So my husband and I travel monthly. Sometimes it's for work, we do a lot of our work in VA and SC. But sometimes it's for play. Either way, I like to keep our toiletries ready to go as well as some of the necessities we need while we are on the road. The destination is fun, the restaurants, the sites but if you aren't comfortable in the hotel or your VRBO, then the trip will not be as enjoyable. When we travel, we love to stay at a VRBO. After a few dozen stays, we have perfected what is needed to travel with you. Once thing we found that is usually missing are a few kitchen items. While the basic VRBO has pots and pans and utensils, we are missing a few things from home. We also love to bring a few comforts from home while we are traveling so I have put together a few tips for you to make your own traveling easier and more enjoyable. Tip # 1 - Grab a small clear plastic container and fill with your favorite spices, a bit of olive oil (enough for a couple of meals), Keurig pods, your favorite tea bags, and maybe some sugar or stevia. I use little small containers for spices, it cuts down on space in your container.
Tip # 2 - Be sure to update your kitchen items a few times a year and keep items fresh. I store our container in our pantry. Most spices and oils will keep in a cool dry place for over a year.
Tip # 3 - Find a good toiletry bag that is durable and can hold a lot of product. If you are anything like me, when I go out of town, I want all the comforts of home. I found this bag on Amazon and love it. It's clear so that you can see everything in it and it's big for taller, full-size items.
Tip # 4 - If we are traveling longer than a few days, I will usually forego the toiletry bag and use these bags instead. They are great for shopping, and other trips but I found them extremely helpful when we went on our honeymoon a few years ago. You load them up with what you need and drop it in the bathroom when you get there. Nothing to unpack.
Tip # 5 - Last but not least. I always travel with my pillow and my sound machine. I am such a light sleeper and can't sleep without a white noise machine. I found a travel one a few years ago and it always comes with me. It has two settings, so you can lower the sound if you need to and it's pretty small and compact.
Tip # 6 - I always carry wet wipes with me. In the car and in our bags. It's always helpful when stopping for breaks on the road but we have stayed a few times at a hotel or VRBO where it just needed a quick wipe-down. One of the best things I learned was wiping down the remote and light switches. These are often neglected when the cleaning crew comes in. So I buy wipes in bulk and have them in the car when we need them.
One of the most important tips are the snacks! We also grab a few of our favorite things with us when we are hitting the road: jerky and cheese crackers. We make our own jerky, but any kind of crackers are my favorite!
