How to NOT Gut your Kitchen

Updated: Jul 5, 2023

We've all been there. You move into a new space and the kitchen isn't exactly to your design style or functionality. The cabinets, flooring and maybe even the countertops are in great shape or you may just not have the budget to upgrade. Whatever the reason, you wait. But maybe you don't have to. There are plenty of small changes you can do to make your space beautiful, functional and more inline with 'your style'. Here are a few of our favorite quick fix items you can do! (Or we can help you do!)

  • Paint Your Cabinets - I know...this seems like a huge undertaking but with the right prep, paint and patience; it's completely doable. Especially if you have real wood cabinets. There are plenty of DIY / How-To Videos on the best way to prep and paint your cabinets. Experiment with your favorite colors...cabinets don't have to be white.

  • Cabinet Surgery - Can you remove the doors and wallpaper the interior shelves? Maybe add pull-outs to deep older cabinets to create more organization. Change out the hardware and hinges to a more modern look. Or add moldings or decorative trims to boring old slab doors. You would surprised how a little can go a long way.

  • Add or Remodel an Island - If you have the space, adding a few base cabinets with a wood top is a simple fix. You can find cabinets at your local home supply store or even local thrift stores. Add bead board for a decorative element and paint it in a different color than your kitchen. Get creative, maybe a large piece of furniture would work. Sidenote: my husband and I recently bought a vanity at a consignment store and plan to hack it into a large island...stay tuned for that project!

  • Get New Appliances - This one is tricky. But if you have dated appliances that don't work half the time, the investment in new ones would be worth it. Functionality in a kitchen is the main priority. It doesn't matter how beautiful it is if you can't cook a proper meal.

  • Install New Countertops - If your cabinets are in pretty good shape but the countertop isn't, a new countertop would be an easy upgrade. You can save money by choosing granite or a quartz remnant. There are lots of ways to make it affordable. Make sure you are working with a reputable fabricator, the quality of stone and the work behind it is important.

  • Add a Backsplash - Another area that is totally DIY. There are so many options now days. It's isn't just about tile. You can add wallpaper, hand paint a unique pattern, or use a peel and stick tile that is easily removable. Get creative!

  • Update Your Lighting - Switch out the overhead lighting or paint it. Add some battery operated sconces. Small touches will make a kitchen feel homey and cozy.

The bottom line - it doesn't have to be an overhaul, expensive and gutted. There are small things you can do to make it your own. Keeping the footprint and using the existing materials is a sustainable way to update and modernize your space. Call us today for more information on how we can help you achieve your dream look.
